Privacy Policy
Arisen is a Bible reader and study notebook. You can read, highlight, take notes, and build studies, and with an account all of it follows you from one phone to the next. It is built to keep only what it needs to do that, and nothing is used for advertising or sold.
Reading without an account
You can use Arisen without signing in. Everything then stays on your phone. Nothing you do in the app is sent to us. If you sign in later, what you have on the phone moves into your new account.
What the app stores
- Your account: the email address, name, and account ID from the sign-in you choose (Apple, Google, or an email and password). If you use Sign in with Apple and hide your email, we only see Apple's relay address.
- What you write: highlights, verse notes, and studies (outlines of passages, headings, and notes). Photos you add to a study are handled differently; see below.
- Your reading: reading plans (tracks) and your place in each one, your reading history, and which verses you have read, which fill in your reading map.
- Your memory verses and your progress memorizing them.
- Your settings: things like reader appearance and your last highlight color. Notification reminders are set on your phone and stay there.
All of this is stored on your phone. When you are signed in, it is also stored in your account on Google Firebase, Arisen's cloud service. That is how your data comes back when you sign in on a new phone. Only your account can read it there. Google's Firebase terms apply to that storage.
What the app does not do
- It does not use analytics, advertising, or tracking of any kind.
- It does not sell your information or share it with anyone for their own use.
- It does not read your contacts, calendar, photo library, or location. Photos reach the app only when you take one or pick one.
Services the app relies on
- Google Firebase handles sign-in and stores your account data, as described above. Password-reset emails are sent through it as well.
- Google Sign-In and Sign in with Apple confirm who you are when you choose them. Their own privacy policies cover that step.
- Audio Bible downloads come from Google Cloud Storage the first time you play a book. That request is an ordinary download and carries no information about you or your account.
Photos in your studies
You can add a photo to a study, such as a bulletin, a slide, or a page of notes, by taking one with the camera or picking one from your library. When you pick a photo, iOS hands the app only that photo; the app never sees the rest of your library.
Photos stay on the phone they were added on. They are not uploaded to your account, to us, or to anyone else, so a study opened on another phone shows where a photo was without the photo itself. They are included in your phone's own backup (iCloud or your computer) if you have one turned on. Each account's photos are kept separately, and signing out leaves them on the phone for when you sign back in, without showing them to anyone else who signs in.
Siri, widgets, and reminders
Siri requests are handled by Apple under Apple's privacy terms. The app only receives the result, such as the passage you asked for. Widgets show content from the app on your phone. Reminders and the daily verse are notifications scheduled on your phone, with no notification server involved.
Sharing
When you share a verse, a card, or a study, it goes only where you send it, through the iOS share sheet.
Tips
If you leave a tip in the app, Apple handles the payment. We never see your payment details.
Your data is yours
- Download My Data (Settings → My Data) makes two files, your studies and notes as a readable document and one file with everything Arisen holds for you, plus the study photos on this phone.
- Delete Account (Settings → Account → Delete Account) permanently removes your account and everything stored in it, from the cloud and from your phone, study photos included. It cannot be undone, so download your data first if you want a copy.
- Signing out removes your data from the phone but keeps it in your account for the next time you sign in. Study photos are the exception: they stay on the phone, as described above.
- Deleting the app removes everything stored on the phone. Data in your account stays until you delete the account.
Children
Arisen is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
